When is the Scholarship Awarded?

The most recent application form is made available online every December and the deadline for submission is normally mid- to late-March.  Decisions are made by mid-April.

Who is Eligible?

Applicant must be the child or dependent of an employee of a PHA in good membership standing.

If the dependent is a step child, the employee must self-certify that the child completing the application is their dependent.

Guardianship relationships will be considered on a case-by-case basis

This scholarship is not for children of commissioners or residents.

Applicant must be a graduating high school senior

Applicant must be a U. S. Citizen.

Applicant must have demonstrated excellence in the areas of academics, extracurricular school activities and community service.

How Much is the Scholarship?

The number of scholarships is determined each fall by the Scholarship Committee, based on the THA annual budget.  The maximum amount per awardee is $4000 for College/University Scholarship Applications; $4000 for Technical/Trade School Applications.

What Must be in the Application Package

Letter of introduction from the PHA executive director or the parent’s immediate housing authority supervisor confirming the applicant’s eligibility

If the applicant is a step child of the PHA employee, a letter from the employee self-certifying the applicant is a dependent.

Completed application form

TYPED Essay (minimum 500 words)  describing how this scholarship will influence your future.

Three (3) letters of recommendation

  1. one personal (someone who knows you outside of school and work)
  2. two from community organizations, churches, supervisors and/or teachers

Letters from each organization for whom you performed community service during your four years of high school, indicating activity(ies) and number of hours volunteered.

Certified transcript of grades INCLUDING FIRST HALF OF SENIOR YEAR or a letter from the school stating that this information is not yet available to the student.

The application asks for size of graduating class, class rank and ACT and/or SAT scores (except application for Technical/Trade School does not require ACT/SAT scores). THIS INFORMATION MUST BE INCLUDED or a letter from the school stating that this information is not yet available to the student.

How are the Applications Rated?

Applications are rated by the Scholarship Committee on a 100 point scale, as follows:

College/University Application

application form: 15 points maximum

essay: 25 points maximum

recommendation letters:   10 points maximum

grade point average:   15 points maximum

SAT/ACT Score:  5 points maximum

extracurricular activities and honors: 15 points maximum

community service: 15 points maximum

Technical/Trade School Application

application form: 15 points maximum

essay: 25 points maximum

recommendation letters:   10 points maximum

grade point average:   20 points maximum

extracurricular activities and honors: 15 points maximum

community service: 15 points maximum
